In the aftermath of the Council of Chalcedon in 451, miaphysite Christians, often targeted as heretics by the imperial church, confronted periodic violence and persecution. In this book, Christine Shepardson reshapes our understanding of late antiquity by centering Syriac Christianity in these complex and politicized doctrinal conflicts. Drawing on critical studies of violence and memory, she traces narratives of resistance and other rhetorical strategies by which miaphysite leaders radicalized their followers to endure physical deprivation and harm rather than abandon their church community.\n\nhttps://www.ucpress.edu/books/a-memory-of-violence/hardcover\n\nhttps://utk.academia.edu/ChristineShepardson\nhttps://kuleuven.academia.edu/PhilipMichaelForness",

"description": "TeTra Research Seminar | March 26, 2026\n\nJulia Schwarzer (KU Leuven)\n•A Mischievous Manuscript or Infidel Rule Reimagined: Julian in Coptic Sources•\n\nThis paper is a first-time discussion of the reception of Julian the Apostate (r. 361–363) exclusively in Coptic sources. Its point of departure is the depiction of Julian in the Coptic Church History (CCH), a product of the Alexandrian patriarchate composed shortly after the Council of Chalcedon (451). The council marked the beginning of a massive shift in the balance of ecclesiastical power in which the anti-Chalcedonian (later termed “Coptic”) church of Egypt was marginalized and faced perceived “infidel rule”. \n\nThe paper focuses on the depiction of the renegade emperor in an hitherto unnoticed variation of a Coptic homily on the Three Youths in the fiery furnace known from the Book of Daniel. This variation is preserved in an unpublished manuscript in Dublin identified by the author of this paper. By including the sequence on the pagan emperor, the compilers of the Dublin manuscript spanned a chronological arc of infidel rule from the 6th century BC to the 6th century AD: From Nebuchadnezzar II to Julian Apostata to the Chalcedonian emperor Justinian and his successors. This contribution understands itself as a springboard for further research on the perception of “infidel rule” in the Egyptian church and later Coptic literature – both in the realms of historiography and hagiography. \n\nhttps://kuleuven.academia.edu/JuliaSchwarzer",

"description": "TeTra Research Seminar | February 26, 2025\n\nMaria S. Thomas (University of Vienna)\n•Publishing in a Twelfth-Century Syriac Monastery: Manuscript Production, Authority, and Scribal Practice at the Monastery of Mary Magdalene in Jerusalem•\n\nThe Monastery of Mary Magdalene and Simon the Pharisee in Jerusalem enjoyed a period of particular flourishing in the twelfth century, when, through ecclesiastical and possibly royal patronage, the monastery was revived both spiritually and materially. Part of this revival involved the production of several Syriac manuscripts for use within the monastic community: manuscripts were copied, repaired, and collected at the monastery during this period.\nThis paper examines manuscript production at the monastery during this period, with particular attention to the paratextual material found in these manuscripts, and advances two central claims. First, ecclesiastical oversight in manuscript production can be understood as a form of publishing (or licensing) that materially attested to a text’s correctness and communal acceptability long after its original composition. Second, the paratextual strategies employed in this publishing process reveal that manuscripts were conceived not simply as copies of texts, but as authorised and materially situated books.\n \nhttps://univie.academia.edu/MariaThomas",

"description": "TeTra Research Seminar | July 9, 2026\n\nSo Miyagawa (University of Tsukuba)\n•Examining the Apocalypse of Elijah•\n\nThis paper examines the Coptic Apocalypse of Elijah (Apoc. El.) through its material transmission in Upper Egyptian manuscripts. Its central question is how a para-biblical apocalyptic text circulated in relation to canonical scripture and what this circulation reveals about local Christian communities in Egypt. The evidence points to three different modes of transmission. In British Library Or. 7594 (Sa2), Apoc. El. appears after canonical books, including Deuteronomy, Jonah, and Acts, but its cursive script and absence of a title suggest that it was added secondarily to a biblical codex. In P. Chester Beatty 2018 (Sa3), the text is transmitted independently, with punctuation that seems designed to support oral reading, indicating liturgical or homiletic use. In the Upper Egyptian codices Ach and Sa1, Apoc. El. is copied together with the Apocalypse of Zephaniah, suggesting a more intentional grouping of apocalyptic texts.\n\nThese different manuscript contexts show that Apoc. El. did not occupy a single stable position in Coptic literary culture. It could be attached to canonical scripture, used independently in performance, or included in an apocalyptic collection. This flexibility suggests that the boundary between canonical and para-biblical literature was not rigid, but was negotiated through scribal practice, monastic use, and local theology. Greek fragments further indicate that multiple forms of the text circulated before or alongside the Coptic versions, while later Coptic works such as the Apocalypse of Shenoute and the History of Joseph the Carpenter show its continued influence on Egyptian Christian eschatology. In this sense, Apoc. El. exemplifies “living literature”: a text whose meaning and authority were shaped by the material and communal settings in which it was copied, read, and reused.\n\nhttps://tsukuba.academia.edu/SoMiyagawa",
